I went out Thursday with five hounds and started a bear around 7:30 AM. A couple of the DWR folks followed me along in case I caught a bear for biological reasons. The bear trail lead the hounds down in a gorge that drops a thousand to fifteen hundred feet, and in some places th walls are straight up and down.
It was nearly noon by the time we walked over to the gorge and could hear those hounds treeing in the canyon bottom. And truth be told, I wasn't sure I could get off into those hounds, let alone climb back up out so I left those two people in my party out on top to come around and pick me up. The walk out from below the hounds was down a rough canyon along a rocky river and took nearly three hours. It was after 5:00 PM when I made it back to my truck.
The bear was another light brown sow and not much different than the last one. No photos on this one, as I went light and only carried a gun, water and my spot locater for emergency coverage. Oh yes, I had my cell phone in one of those button down leg pockets that got riped off and another cell phone was lost....damn I hate that!

Good thing you left those DWR folks on top! They woulda never made it down I bet! Too bad about the cell phone and your lack of camera. Great story, but I miss the pics!

Thanks for the comments and understanding of how it is to lose two cell phones in six months running dogs. Sorry I didn't take my pocket camera along to share that beautiful canyon and the bear tree with you. But you know how it is, the older we get the tougher it becomes to go into places like that.
And yes, I do think I was smart to leave those two biologists on the rim rather than dragging them off into that canyon. One was a yoiung lady that had recently had knee surgery and didn't need that; the other was probably older than me and had had a bad knew for years.
