What a day!!!! The dogs struck three times off the box shortly after sunrise. The guys decided the first strike wasn't a fresh enough track. The second wasn't much better. They turned em out on the third strike. I tried to get out and get some shots of them taking off, but someone shut the truck door on my head (thanks George!!!) :'(So I had to watch from the truck. They took off loud and proud.
All the trucks took off in different directions around the canyon to find out where they were chasin Mr. Bear. Ken got them first with his tracker. When we got stopped we could hear them treed solid. He radioed all the other guys and they all converged on our location. The bear was about 1/2 mile up the side of the ridge. My knees had been stiff and hurting all morning so I decided to stay at the radio and Ken, Sarah and George (along with about 6 other kids and a dozen other adults) started up the ridge.
When they got there they discovered that it was not a good situation. Sarah had been crawling through the brush ahead of him. The bear had chosen a 10 X 10 area to climb a tree. Ken grabbed Sarah and pulled her back. There were already a couple of kids in there. He grabbed a couple of them just as the bear started down the tree. He was about 5 ft from Ken and Sarah. Ken hollered for one of the guys to shoot as he pushed the kids back into the brush. They shot the bear about 2 feet off the ground. He hit the ground, ran a few feet and rolled ass over tea kettle down the hill. Ken took off after the bear to make sure it was dead. Sarah started to cry when she lost site of him. Brenda went back in and got her. She was OK buy the time she got to the truck to me. She watched them skin and field dress the bear and helped feed fat to the dogs.
We went back to camp and Sarah shot her rifle and played with the dogs while the adults had coffee around the stove. Then we loaded up and went to the Wildwood cafe for brunch of eggs, potatoes, pancakes, bacon, sausage and sodas before driving 2 hours home.
