Maverick is the second dog from the left....
different tree, day and lion, four dogs on the tree rather than six, had to snow sled in for the track and to dump and limited by room......
Yea, ol' Ike has been hunting and working those dogs a little bit..
I took six hounds out a week ago and started an old lion track in the ice and dry south slopes off a tom lion scratch around early to mid-morning. They all left out ahead of me and were gone by the time I found what they were on. Dogs out after dark and no treeing switch action or no dogs back down off the mountain. I was back up before daylight and dogs were moving but still no tree switch action, thought they were headed out. Around 9:00 AM the treeing switches started going off on all of those dogs and I thought "oh man".
It was around 10:30 AM when I started into the dogs, radio beep only and no sounds. I reached the tree around 2:30 or 3:00 PM and back out to the road at 6:30 PM or just after dark.......
I just had four days off and laid home the first two waiting for a gal to call me to go hunt a lion, no call so I loaded up Sunday and put thirty miles on the snow sled. A female size track was found and I thought I'd put a couple of the older dogs out and two of the younger ones; the older ones were Choco and Griz, and the two younger ones were Rui Li and my coming three year old plott dog Maverick..
Well, they smoked that lion and ol' Ike had to climb into another lion tree. And luckily, I made it out around 5:30 PM and was loaded up and driving home before dark--life is great!
That black plott Maverick has been doing pretty darn well this winter. He was locked up tight like an old dog after two days down the track and was hammer his guts out yesterday after four hours on the wood........he is gonna be a keeper!
