Took the kids and headed for the woods on Saturday morning. Got up there and had time to get the dogs collared up and head for mr bear. There was snow everywhere. Robbie's eyes were huge when the sun came up!! He just wanted to get out and play!!
We drove around looking for a bear track inthe snow. Our friend Billy went the other way around the mountain. We found a frozen track and the dogs hit on it a little. They wanted to wait and see if it thawed if the dogs hit hard on it. Ken made a sled out of plastic bags for Robbie and Sarah to play while we waited.
Then Billy called on the radio and said he found a great track so we drove over to where he was. These were the tracks we saw:
Was a big cat. We went back to the original tracks and let the dogs out on it. They milled around a couple of minutes and then we could hear that the race was on. We tracked em all day long, up this road to see if we could hear, down this road, Ken drove us all the way down one road to a cabin and walked in. We sat and waited for him for about an hour and he came back and told us he could hear them right across the canyon. He told the others what he heard and we all drove off and around to where he thought they were. They were behind a locked gate for a hunt club. We had to get the key from a store close by after they called and okd it. Well, that took another half hour or more. By the time we got into where they were, they still weren't treed. That bear had been smacking em around all over the canyon. Billy and a couple of young guys hiked in and tried to get a shot, but by dark no one got close enough so we called the dogs off. We got Lightening back with bite marks in her nose, Radar back with bite marks in his back leg, and several other dogs were injured. Beauty, Annie, T ank, and Sissy were all missing. 5 other dogs missing as well. Scary considering we had heard him hurting dogs. We were scared that they were too injured to make it out, or were dead. We drove to where we let em out to see if they had come back. Before we got there, Beauty was running down the middle of the road. We got to the top and honked and got a beep on all the missing dogs. Another was running the road where we let them off. Bob called out his Tracker dog. Gene called out his black and tan. That only left our 3 and one other. It was really late so we left em for the night and went back to camp.
Ken got up the next morning and set out looking for dogs. The babies and I stayed warm in the trailer and slept. When they came back it was lunch time. He had Tank and found the Julie dog that was also out. That only left our Annie andSissy. They had also run a bear that morning and left it. They cooked lunch and we ate. Everyone else left since it was Sunday night. Ken the kids and I went back out to find the girls. We tracked Sissy till well after dark. She was headed down hill. When we got to the highway her tracker was hitting off the box! We were right on top of her and couldn't see her. Ken and I had the same sick feeling that she was dead on the side of the road so we both were watching. We came to the store and it was still getting louder. He pulled in and went to get out of the truck. He felt some nudging on his leg and looked down. She was there whimpering. He put her up in the cab and she sprawled out between us and rolled on her back. We drove like that to camp. She sure was glad we found her. No visible injuries. We got up the next morning to go look for Annie again. Ken had gotten a signal on her on Sunday morning and then lost it. Nothing, so we came home. We had been here for about 2 hours when we got a call that someone had picked her up. Ken turned around and drove back 2 hours to get her.
