It's been a long time since our last rain and it is dry as a bone. No dew the last 2 mornings. Rigged a hot one about 7:30 this morning. Turned my rig dog in to line things out. He locked on to the track and was lining-out barking every breath. All set to turn in my other 3 dogs when here comes a logging truck! By the time the truck got out of the way it was too late to turn dogs to him. Just as well...once the bear kicked it in overdrive the scent faded fast. My dog had to work hard to move it at all. So, I called him in. Got a big shock when I got back to town and went to top off my trucks gas tank at the local truck stop. Regular unleaded was $2.60 a gallon yesterday...and today it had jumped to $2.80! My wife tells me hamburger is $2.99 a lb. (for the light pink stuff) at the local stores in Ontonagon. Hope nobody buys it and it rots on the shelf . Rich

Smiley...thanks for the support. I find myself being selective and picking the days to hunt in order to manage the high cost of gasoline. Now my big focus is just to get the dogs well conditioned before hunting season. Will likely wait for rain before going again. Lost my job a year ago last July...when another bidder got the contract for the work I was doing. Saw it coming and saved what I thought was enough money to carry me to social security retirement in November. On the plus side...my health is good and I can still follow the hounds.

Howdy Whitedog...your rain dance worked! Got a friendly little shower this afternoon. At least enough to settle the dust. Regarding the price of gasoline...it'll be interesting to see the impact of it over the Labor Day weekend. It's my guess tourist activities here in the U.P. will be way down.

Hope all goes well for you rwh so you can make it till retirement . I am reqally looking forward to this fall season as I will be able to get to the woods much more than I ever have.but still am going to feel the bite of gas . ( I have picked up 3 dogs to run for people and they are going to help with a lot of gas for me.

Smiley...where are you located? I used to hunt dogs for other people. Been thinking about getting back into it next year to help cover expenses...as you're doing. VC and his Dad are coming over to hunt with me early in the season. Looking forward to the hunting, too.

Smiley...spent most of my adult life wishing I lived in Idaho. With 5 kids, and making my living in an underground copper mine, I never made it our of Michigan! Kids are raised, but it's too late to think about making the move now. Michigan still has enough bears to keep me busy I guess. Went hunting this morning. Cold trailed a bear a little over an hour, but never got it jumped. Rather than burn up more gasoline I wrapped it up for the day. Hope your day was more productive than mine.

Howdy VC...We've had a couple light showers the past few days. Conditions are better. Cold trailed one today a little over an hour, but never got him jumped. I share your dilema with females coming in heat when you need to be hunting. Got a female Plott due soon and it could definetly be a problem during hunting season. Anyhow, wish you good fortune with your hunting.

Notice your running a plott, I had plotts years ago, never got to go bear hunting with them but treed a lot of coon. Had some Ursus Rowdy stuff and some Roarks bred dogs, also several Weems bred females. I hunted with Evert Weems from Salem Illinois, a true gentleman and a real hound man, his wife made the finest breakfast a man could ever ask for. I had a nice male from John Best of Two Rivers Kennels, my buddy's borrowed him to bear hunt with, I had four little ones and a six day a week job so never got to go with them. I guess I got the best of that deal, they are now all divorced and I'm still married and am enjoying my first grand child

Brokbranch...enjoyed your post. Sounds like you had some top shelf Plott blood. I regret never trying any of the Weems Plotts. My all time favorite Plott dog was a big red brindle male I got from Ola Forbes back in the mid 1970's...had 2 Cascade Plotts I got a lot of enjoyment from, along with a male Plott named Jed that came from Idaho (never did know what strain he was out of). Looking back...I have hunted more Plotts than any other breed. Congradulations on being blessed with your first grandchild. We have 5 kids...are grown and on their own...and finally have our first grandchild due in January.

Evert had Doc, Butch and Joe back then. Doc was his coon dog, he used him on bear also, Butch, he liked on Bear, and Joe, he like him on a mean bear from what I remember Evert saying. If your Plott came from Idaho in the seventy's he probably came from "Bear Jump Plotts" owned by Frank Staab, he is the only one I can remember from Idaho at that time with Plotts that advertised nationally.
