Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox recently determined commercial baiting on private land in the CFA Program (Commercial Forest Act) is prohibited. There is also a law on the books outlawing baiting-for-profit on state land without a permit. There is an article in the March issue of Woods-N-Water spelling out where all this is headed. I don't know how the rest of you feel, but I have never had much of a problem with small scale commercial baiting. However, In the 34 years I've been bear hunting here in Michigan I have witnessed the quality of our bear hunting go directly to hell, in part due to the big commercial baiting operations and the number of bear killed because of it. Case in point...Wisconsin does not have any better bear habitat than we do yet our quality of bear hunting pales compared to Wisconsin. They do not tolerate uncontrolled commercial baiting...they regulate it. I'd sure like to know how the rest of the folks on this site feel about this issue.

Miyote...thanks for your reply...the big commercial baiting operations set up a series of bear bait sites, mostly on public land. Some run close to 40 bait sites and currently they charge $750 to as high as $1,500 to hunt off their bait for a week. They tend to saturate an area with the sites they set-up making it more efficient to tend baits...and to reduce travel. If you draw a bear tag, plan a 2 week vacation bear hunting some place on public land...and end up hunting where one of these big commercial baiting operations have set-up shop you'll be competing with them. They have a big advantage over you because most of them begin tending baits regularily starting August 10 when it's legal to start baiting. And another point...if your hunting with hounds where some dude just paid $750 to $1,500 to sit on a bait you are often headed for a conflict.
