I started out with a 48 channel box, which allowed me to tracy my dogs and was in the same range as some of my friends, so I coould track theres aswell, as for range there most all the same now days less you buy something realy cheap like innotec or or icom. i would recommend any thing by wildlife or johnson, or if you want top of the line you can look at tracker maxima, I use a tracker maxima 5000 and wouldnt be able to use any thing else now that ive had a maxima, one of those things you get pretty much what you pay for, tho I find the johnson sealed collars to be the best over all and for sure the toughest on the market and thier prolly the cheapest collar out there, me and the guys i bear hunt with hunt as tough a country as one can hunt and find the maxima tracking box and the johnson collar to be the best combo. I hope this helps you out, any more questions just ask...

Ok I guess if ya only want to track 2 dogs. Personally I wouldnt buy a tracker.Have seen several and here in these Mts they just dont do the job. Wild life had been the "bread and butter" box around here(1000 or 2000)However I just got a Quick Track 6000 about a year ago.It tracks right with(and a few times this season better than)The WL boxes. As far as collars right now QT had the strongest out there.Did side by side test this past season with them.Johnsons,Magnum and Kliens.QT has almost twice the strenght on them all.whit johnson and magnum next. You couldnt give me another Klien. Right now you can get a QT 6000 with ant.collar and case for $835.The 6000 can track any collar on 216,217,218,219,and 220.Gives you lots of options on collars ,plus you can track your buddies collars JMO

I have a Wildlife Materials TRX-3S with 3 Wildlife collars. It's probably 10 yrs old. Range is up to 8 Miles but in actual hunting conditions it's 1-4 miles. I don't have mountains but it's pretty hilly in places. I have found a dog in the ground with it and located a lost collar, so it works pretty well. It's one of the lower cost units and I think 3 collars is the limit. I never need to track more than 3 dogs and 5 miles of range is sufficient most times ...so it fills my needs. Had no problems with it. I think this link will take you to what I have www.houndhunting.com/modules.php?name=catalog&file=product_info&cPath=21_33&products_id=53Comes with one collar.

Another question i got.How many collars can you run on one frequiency? The manufactures reccomend 100 per freq. That gives plenty of spacing between collars.Example 217.010 next collar 217.020.You get them closer than 10 it can be hard to fine tune one collar in over the other.Collars do not always tune in at their number.I have one collar that is 216.224 that at times tunes better at 216.222 or 216.227.

rich these guys are giveing you good advise, the tracker maxima now will all so hook up to a roof mount, johnson collars mite not track as far as some collars but if a dog gets out of range on a johnson collar you are to far away to begine with. the maxima all so tracks 216 to 220, I didnt look at what you posted yet, but bout any box will get you started out and work for you, I just wouldnt recomend you waste any money on a innotec or icom, other than that most any brand will do you right, in most all cases cost only reflects number of channels you get, I only use the maxima, prolly mostly because i spend a lot of time on foot and its compact to carry in the swamps, its realy nice for cat hunting, cause the bobcats here in michigan take to the thickest cover they can find when the dogs are on them and they can get in deep, I all ways go with the dogs on a cat track cause if you dont you will be a long ways behind up here in the yooper land, if you have never hunted up here there can be 10 miles tween roads in lots of these swamps sections up here, maybe you guys can hook up with fieldwalker for a cat hunt up here next winter.
back to the reason i find johnson collars best, theres lots of rock up here and if a bear pounds a dog on the rocks most other brand of collars break, I mean the case the collar is made in breaks and lets water in and there done, only johnson collar ive had break was on a dog that got run over by a truck, the collar and the dog both died, ive tryed the new wild lifes and they break easy and so did the ot's i tryed wild lifes lasted bout 1.5 hunting seasons and the ot didnt make one year, though ot refunded my money, but any system will get you started and you can all ways sell the used to someone getting started that needs a good deal on a used system to get started, when you can afford to upgrade, hope this helps, now I will go look at what you posted lol have a great day...

hey I just looked at the unit you posted the link too, dont buy that, its to much money for what your getting, get a 1000 or a 5000 its not that much more or get a wild life with lot more channels for less money and do you a good job, you can get the wild life trx 3 for less than that and its a good box, prolly get the wildlife trx48 for that or less, read up good befor you buy and ask questions befor you spend the money we are here to help any way we can, i will keep my eyes out for a good used unit for you and let you know if i find any thing...
