I have never liked a dog with a real cold nose for deer.A little cold trailing is OK,but I don't want a dog to cold trail for a hour before jumping the deer. How do you feel about a cold nose dog?I'm talking about a dog that will cold trail for hours before jumping.

DD where i am from a good cold nose dog can make the diffrance in getting a run or not, first and formost a dog has to be a cold trailer for me, grantit one cold run the livein chit out of deer with a hot nose dog here but not bear and cats, cats realy need a cold trailer, bears if your in a large group maybe get a run every other days with a hot nose dog and thats a maybe, most of the time you will get a couple tracks and take the hottest one you have but most of the time i am starteing tracks that are atleast 4 to 5 hours old some hotter and some colder.
its not leagle here to pursue deer with dogs, sure sounds like fun though, i have a couple young dogs that need to be broke off deer thou, not saying i am haveing a problem but they will take a hot one givein the chance, my old dogs will run a bobcat all day long in the deer yards and never take one, but they was young once too lol deer yards are hard on young dogs lol

Whitedog61 Its legal to hunt deer with hounds in Mississippi and most southern states.Deer down here do not yard up.And the deer pop is so high there is no need for a cold nose dog.Around here you can back up to a cut over and drop the tail gate. And just free cast the dogs into it and have a hot race going in less than 20 minutes, with a medium to hot nose dog.And a cold nose dog will get on the first track it comes to and work it for hours trying to get the deer up.Back when I coon hunted I enjoyed listening to a good cold nose dog work a track out.I just don't much care for a cold nose dog on deer..

yeah i know its leagle down south in many states, sure wish it was here, most of the deer houndsmen i have talked to over the years like walkers best, they say a walkers was meant to chase deer and a lot of them like beagles and all i can say to that is i have had a few beagles over the years i couldnt totaly break off deer, they say the beagles dont push the deer so far in a straight line, i have had a ton of off game races in my life of hounding on deer, i would just love to go out hunting with the purpose of turning lose on deer, i think it would be fun to run and gun deer, maybe some day i will get the chance to hunt deer down south with dogs, sounds like fun, keep them dogs in the woods and post some pics if you can, have a great day.

I agree with dd444 on this one I would rather have a hotnosed dog than a medium or coldnosed dog anyday, I want a dog to go in the woods and have a deer up in no time and not just bump around for hours like the Redbone we got now it gets on my lastnerve when it happens but hey whatever works so, takemeasy and have a goodhunt..........-tim
